His legacy, deeply rooted in his love for the ocean, his dedication to farming, and his unwavering family values, continues to live on through those who knew and loved him. Similarly, his strength, wisdom, and gentle spirit were evident in every moment of his remarkable life.

Hector George Campbell | The Man

Born on February 15, 1931, Hector embodied strength, humility, and dedication. He was a man of immense strength and commitment, a hardworking individual who believed in living a life of purpose and service.

A long-standing member of the Mt. Salem Open Bible Church in Montego Bay, Jamaica, he was deeply involved in the church community. His commitment to his faith was evident not only in his regular attendance but also in the way he lived his life:

  • Always lending a helping hand.
  • Offering encouragement.
  • And sharing his wisdom.

Mr. Campbell, as he was often referred to, was known for his open heart and generous spirit. His home was a welcoming space for everyone—family, friends from the local community, and even those visiting from abroad.

No matter where people came from, they found a place of comfort and warmth within his household. His kindness and hospitality knew no boundaries, and many found solace in his presence.

He was a people person—his infectious personality and genuine warmth attracted friends from all over the world. Whether through his work, his travels, or his deep roots in the community, he built connections that spanned continents.

His friendships, cultivated over decades, spoke to his ability to make everyone feel valued and respected. He traveled several times to various parts of the United States and once to Canada. However, regardless of where his journeys took him, his heart always remained connected to his family and the familiar shores of Montego Bay.

Throughout his life, Hector’s compassion, faith, and dedication to family and community left an indelible mark on everyone he met. He was a father, a mentor, a friend, and an inspiration to many.

The Ocean | Hector’s Second Home

The sea was Hector’s second home. He was a highly respected lifeguard and swimming instructor for many years.

For 32 years, he dedicated his life to keeping others safe at sea while working at the Doctor’s Cave Bathing Club in Montego Bay. He started as a beach attendant and quickly moved on to become a lifeguard—a role that showcased his bravery, commitment, and expertise.

Throughout his career, he saved numerous lives, becoming a local hero and earning the respect of both residents and visitors alike.

Mr. Campbell’s dedication to water safety extended beyond his professional duties. He taught entire families—parents, children, and grandchildren—how to swim through his Sunfish Swimming School. His lessons were more than just about swimming techniques. Most importantly, they were about building confidence, fostering discipline, and instilling a love for the ocean.

Many of his students went on to become skilled in lifesaving techniques, and some even considered him a lifelong mentor. Among those he taught, a few became like family, including his “adopted” son, Sean Hawkins from the USA.

Hector’s influence reached far beyond the waters of Montego Bay, as many visitors returned year after year to reconnect with him. His friendships spanned the globe, a testament to his welcoming spirit and the lasting impact of his mentorship.

Furthermore, his passion for the ocean was not just a profession. It was a calling, one that connected him to nature and community alike.

The Farm | The Fruit of His Labor

In addition to his love for the ocean, Hector had a deep connection to the land. As a skilled farmer, he possessed a wealth of knowledge about planting, grafting, and nurturing crops. His ability to understand the rhythm of the seasons and when to plant ensured his backyard and country farm remained productive year-round.

He was particularly known for his manual sugar cane mill, which he set up in his backyard. The cane juice he produced was a favorite among locals and businesses alike, serving hotels, restaurants, local shops, and individuals.

Alongside his cane juice enterprise, he ran a thriving chicken business, raising both broilers and layers. These chickens were known for their quality, and the eggs and meat were sought after by the community.

His generosity extended beyond commerce as he shared the fruits of his labor with friends, family, and neighbors. The family backyard was a bountiful haven, featuring mangoes, breadfruit, ackee, bananas, coconuts, June plum, avocados, custard apples, and more.

Whether from his home or his country farm, his produce reached many grateful hands, fostering a sense of community through shared abundance.

Hector’s dedication to both the ocean and the farm reflected his belief in hard work, self-reliance, and giving back to those around him.

Family and Loss | His Resilient Spirit

Despite his resilient spirit, Hector faced profound loss.

  • His eldest son, Ernel, passed away in December 2015.
  • In January 2023, his beloved wife, Clarabell, passed away.
  • His second son, Errol, followed in October 2024.

These losses tested his strength, but he remained steadfast, drawing from his deep faith and love for his family to continue moving forward. His courage in the face of grief served as a guiding light to those around him.

He is survived by daughters Paulette, Veron, Lavern, and Rose; his son, Vernel, “adopted” son Sean Hawkins, as well as grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

  2. Doctors Cave Beach was the stage set for my childhood and Hector was always onstage. Usually he would sit at the bottom of the stairs to the beach, simultaneously keeping watch on the entire beach and warmly acknowledging new arrivals.

He was a a lifesaver in the water, defacto beach policeman on shore, and always a fair and warm human being.

Rest in peace dear Hector. We are all better people for having had you in our lives.
